Dear [fullname]
Whitesci Travel Awards
|
We had a fantastic response this year to our travel award scheme and received over 60 applications. It is definitely getting harder to decide who the awards should be made to; we try to ensure that all of the awards meet the application criteria and that they are fairly evenly distributed throughout the institutions that we deal with. We appreciate the fact that our applicants and their supervisors are clearly making a big effort to send through very professional and comprehensive applications and as a result the standard of the applications we have received is very high.

This year we intended to give out fourteen awards to a total value of R 42,000 in two rounds. However, the quantity of the applications we received in March and the fact that so many contained requests for funding for conferences taking place later in the year, meant that it made sense for us to commit our whole budget in this first round. In addition to that we also pledged three extra awards and we have now committed to seventeen in total for the year. So far awards have been paid out to the following twelve students and we are currently waiting for confirmation of travel from the remaining five students. |

| This does mean that we will not hold another round this year, and so we do apologise to all those students who planned to submit an application later on with the second round. However, we will be running the scheme next year again and will call for applications in early March 2010. We have had some lovely feedback from award recipients, which has really encouraged us to keep the scheme running as it feels like a very worthwhile contribution to our research community. |
