Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a critical family of cytokines involved in the regulation of inflammatory responses and immune functions. The family primarily comprises two distinct proteins: IL-1α and IL-1β. Although they differ slightly in structure and processing, they share several key characteristics:

  • Molecular Weight: Both IL-1α and IL-1β have similar molecular weights.
  • Biological Effects: They exhibit comparable biological activities, including pyrogenicity (fever induction), bone resorption, antigen presentation, and stimulation of both B and T lymphocyte proliferation.
  • Receptors: IL-1α and IL-1β utilize the same receptors on target cells, leading to similar downstream signaling pathways.

IL-1 is produced by a variety of cells, including:

  • Macrophages and Monocytes: Major sources of IL-1, particularly in inflammatory contexts.
  • Adult T Cell Leukemias: Can produce IL-1, influencing disease progression.
  • Fibroblasts and Epithelial Cells: Contribute to local inflammation and tissue responses.
  • Endothelial Cells and Neutrophils: Participate in immune responses and inflammation.
  • Astrocytes: In the central nervous system, they release IL-1 in response to injury or disease.

IL-1 proteins play essential roles in mediating inflammation, regulating immune responses, and influencing various physiological processes.

A separate control set is available upon request for those requiring it for experimental purposes.
